Ten Years Post Injury Update

It’s been ten years since my mother’s TBI. At the age of eighty-two she is the best joke-teller in the Southeast. Her memory is excellent, and her personality remains friendly and likable with a little saltiness thrown in, which makes her even more interesting. However, I feel the loss of my father two years ago took its toll on her physically. (They had been happily married for sixty years.) She was living independently in her apartment, when about six months after he died, she fell and, like the commercial, could not get up. I found her the next day and remarkably, aside from a few bruises, she was fine. I purchased one of those monitoring devices for her to wear and she and I hired a daytime assistant. About six months later after we went out one evening, she fell again while alone in her home but recovered and was able to walk to her bed. She attended a rehabilitation gym but after a few months she refused to continue with the therapy. She still exercises at home (with her assistant beside her) every day, walking, using the step, lifting weights, and doing balance-type routines.
Two years ago, I took her off of that cholesterol-lowering drug and she has not had a seizure since.
She enjoys going out to dinner with my husband and me, and having lunch out with her friends but she’ll only join them if I am there. Occasionally we go to the theater or to see a ballet. She’s also an avid reader. I’m so grateful for having her in my life and can’t imagine the last ten years without her.
